CBSE’s Game-Changing Reforms: Open Book Assessment for Class 9 & 75% Attendance Rule for Board Exams

CBSE’s Game-Changing Reforms: Open Book Assessment for Class 9 & 75% Attendance Rule for Board Exams

What’s Happening?

CBSE has taken major strides towards stress-free, competency-based education:

Open Book Assessment for Class 9:
Beginning with the 2026-27 session, Class 9 final exams will include open-book assessments, allowing students to consult textbooks, notes, and approved resources while answering questions. This follows a successful pilot study and aligns with the National Curriculum Framework (NCFSE 2023) and National Education Policy (NEP 2020).

Compulsory 75% Attendance for Board Exams
For the 2025-26 academic year, all Class 10 and 12 students must secure at least 75% attendance to be eligible for board exams conducted in 2026. Exception requests (medical emergencies, bereavement, participation in national events) must be validated with documents. Schools are required to formally notify parents and monitor attendance strictly.

Why Open Book Assessments?

CBSE’s move aims to curb rote memorization and shift focus to problem-solving, critical thinking, and the practical application of knowledge.

Applies to core subjects: languages, mathematics, science, social science

Students can reference approved materials during exams

Assessments will be part of each academic term’s pen-paper tests

Adoption is optional—schools can choose to implement OBA per CBSE guidelines

Supported by pilot project results and positive teacher feedback

Attendance Norms: Key Points

Minimum required attendance: 75% in theory, practical, and internal assessment sessions

Effective from: 2025-26 academic session

Absence accepted only for valid reasons, with proper certification

Failure to comply leads to disqualification from board exams

Strict monitoring: Schools must keep daily attendance and inform parents of shortfall early

Deadline: All shortage cases must be reported to CBSE by January 7 of the academic year
